Respect your elders. Make your family proud.

But what happens when you do everything you’re supposed to do—and still don’t feel like you can say what you need?

On this episode of Legacy Launchers, I sat down with Cindy Nguyen, a licensed marriage and family therapist, to talk about Asian American mental health, family expectations, boundaries, and the pressure to keep achieving while keeping your feelings to yourself.

I’m Chinese. Cindy is Vietnamese American. Our experiences aren’t identical, but there were plenty of familiar moments.

Especially this one: everyone seems to have an opinion about your future, but who has asked what success means to you?

When Achievement Becomes the Family Language

Cindy’s interest in relationships started long before she became a therapist. As a teenager, she was the friend people came to with relationship problems. She wanted to understand what was happening beneath the surface.

That curiosity connected to her own experience growing up Vietnamese American, navigating emotions and subjects that weren’t always easy to discuss at home.

In our conversation, she described the pressure to be the perfect child, daughter, son, or spouse. When there isn’t much room to express how that pressure feels, the struggle can stay hidden behind achievement.

You learn how to meet expectations. You may get much less practice identifying your own needs.

And the question follows you into adulthood: Am I doing enough?

Cindy described seeing that sense of inadequacy show up in parenting, too. Someone who grew up feeling constantly evaluated can become a parent who constantly questions whether they’re doing a good enough job.

Who Gets to Define Success?

I shared a memory of my mother telling me that following her way of life would make me successful.

What bothered me was that she hadn’t asked what success meant to me.

A prestigious career, a particular income, or an approved life path might represent success to one person. Another person may want a different kind of work, relationship, or daily life.

We also talked about expectations placed on women. When you’re taught to defer to someone else at every stage of your life, where is the space for your own judgment?

Cindy explained that, in family therapy, she takes time to understand each person’s values and perspective. She asks why particular beliefs matter and creates room for people to speak without being interrupted or immediately challenged.

That sounds simple. In a family where age or authority determines whose opinion counts, it can be a significant change.

A younger family member’s perspective deserves to be heard. So does a woman’s definition of the life she wants to build.

Why Saying “No” Can Feel So Loaded

One of the most useful parts of our conversation was Cindy’s explanation of why boundaries can create so much tension.

In the family dynamics she described, saying no may be interpreted as rejection, disrespect, or a lack of love—even when someone is simply communicating a limit.

Cindy framed boundaries as personal limits that you express to other people: what you are comfortable with and what you aren’t.

You can love your parents and disagree with them. You can care about someone and have limits on what you are willing to do.

That distinction can be difficult when agreement has been treated as proof of respect.

Our conversation kept returning to the importance of being able to express a need and have it heard. A relationship needs enough room for both people to exist in it.

Choosing What the Next Generation Inherits

Cindy is also a parent. She spoke about making deliberate choices that differ from what she experienced growing up.

One example was simple: regularly saying “I love you” to her children and her husband.

She connected some older family patterns to survival, including the experiences of generations shaped by war. Understanding that history can help explain how a pattern began. It also raises a question: what do we want to carry forward?

For Cindy, explaining why is an important part of parenting.

Why does this expectation matter? What are we hoping to teach? How does it affect the child receiving it?

She described wanting children to develop discipline and resilience while having room for their own wishes and perspectives.

That requires reflection, especially when stress makes familiar reactions easier to repeat. It also means questioning expectations we may have inherited without ever examining them.

Your Pain Doesn’t Have to Win a Competition

I asked Cindy what she would say to someone who thinks their problems aren’t serious enough for therapy.

She described hearing that concern from clients who question whether they should even complain. Her response was clear: if something is bothering you, it is worth addressing.

In her work, therapy can provide space to understand yourself, improve communication, navigate a breakup or divorce, or explore recurring patterns. She encouraged seeking support before reaching a crisis.

She also described a first session as a collaborative conversation about what someone is experiencing, what they want help with, and what goals make sense for them.

The person seeking help still has a voice in the process.

Culture Is Part of the Story

Toward the end, I asked whether intercultural couples face different challenges.

Cindy emphasized that it depends on the people involved. Culture may be one factor. Family history, past hurt, and whether someone has felt safe expressing themselves can also shape a relationship.

That distinction matters throughout this conversation. Chinese and Vietnamese American families aren’t interchangeable, and no single family represents an entire community.

Recognizing familiar patterns can help us understand our experiences. We still need to see the individual behind them.

The Legacy We Pass Down

This conversation belongs on Legacy Launchers because legacy reaches into our relationships.

It includes whether a child can ask why. Whether a woman can define success for herself. Whether someone can say they’re struggling without worrying that they’ve disappointed everyone.

Cindy’s message was that caring for your mental health does not mean you are weak or that you have failed your family. Addressing what hurts can be part of creating healthier relationships with yourself and the people you love.

We can appreciate what our families gave us and acknowledge what was difficult.

We get to ask what we inherited—and decide what we want to pass on.

🎙️ Listen to my full conversation with Cindy Nguyen, LMFT, on Legacy Launchers.

A Conversation with Cindy Nguyen, LMFT, on Asian American Mental Health By Li Lin | Legacy Launchers Get good grades.
