I\u2019m Building One.<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why I applied for the $10,000 Amber Grant\u2014and what I\u2019d actually do with the money.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I never thought I\u2019d be applying for free money again after college scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet here I am: older, allegedly wiser, and once again explaining why someone should give me money because <strong>I have potential<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, I applied for the <strong>$10,000 Amber Grant for women entrepreneurs<\/strong>. Obviously, $10,000 would be useful. I have yet to meet a startup founder who sees $10,000 and says, \u201cNo thanks, we&#8217;re good.\u201d But writing the application forced me to answer a much bigger question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What exactly am I trying to build with Legacy Launcher Labs\u2014and who am I trying to build it for?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At 18, I Refused to Use My Mother\u2019s Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I was applying to college, my mother repeatedly told me I should write about growing up with a single mom who had cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a college-admissions standpoint, this was probably excellent advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the standpoint of an extremely stubborn 18-year-old?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Absolutely not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remember thinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That\u2019s her story. I want to be judged on mine.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn&#8217;t want hardship to become the most interesting thing about me. I wanted my ideas and accomplishments to speak for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I got into UC Berkeley anyway, so teenage me would like that entered into the official record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with age\u2014and an inconvenient amount of life experience\u2014I understand what my mother was trying to teach me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Context matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where you begin matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It just doesn\u2019t have to determine where you finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some People Inherit a Trust Fund. Some of Us Inherit Google.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word <strong>legacy<\/strong> has always fascinated me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In college admissions, a legacy student traditionally has a parent who attended the same school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But legacy advantages exist everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people grow up around entrepreneurs, lawyers, investors and executives. Their parents understand money, negotiation, investing, real estate and the invisible rules governing opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their family probably \u201chas a person\u201d for everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attorney?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CPA?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investor?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Random billionaire who owns twelve car dealerships and a minor-league baseball team?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably also a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people inherit a trust fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some inherit an alumni network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some inherit parents who know exactly which doors to knock on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Some of us inherit a strong work ethic, survival skills and a Google search bar.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s a huge reason I started Legacy Launcher Labs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t think the circumstances someone is born into should determine the size of the life they\u2019re allowed to build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may not inherit a legacy advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You can still build one.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eleven Kids. Ten Businesses. Five Days.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This stopped being philosophical for me during the summer of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I helped run a five-day entrepreneurship camp for <strong>11 kids<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In five days, those kids launched <strong>10 businesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They worked on products, prototypes, brands, websites, marketing and pitches. Their ideas ranged across cybersecurity, apparel, gaming, technology and physical products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I kept thinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We spend so much time asking children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do you want to be when you grow up?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe we should start asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat can you build this week?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of only consuming clothes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you design them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of only playing games:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you build one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of scrolling past somebody else&#8217;s startup:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you launch yours?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That experience became a blueprint for what I want Legacy Launcher Labs to become: a place where children\u2014and adults\u2014learn to become <strong>creators instead of consumers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And Then AI Helped Eliminate My Job<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because apparently the universe enjoys aggressive branding consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI began changing the industries around me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, a job I held was eliminated in part because of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So naturally\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I started building an AI company.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently, spite is not an official business model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reinvention is.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That experience changed how I think about AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not particularly interested in convincing every business owner to become an AI engineer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m interested in what happens when someone who has spent twenty years becoming excellent at something suddenly hears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAI can do part of your job now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because their experience didn&#8217;t suddenly become worthless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it becomes a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A completely different career they hadn&#8217;t imagined yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the opportunity I see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So What Would I Actually Buy With the Amber Grant?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A 3D printer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because I desperately need more objects occupying every available horizontal surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want a kid to be able to walk into a program and say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have an idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And instead of an adult responding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s cute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cGreat. Let\u2019s make it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Design it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Print it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Break it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Improve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brand it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Build a website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Figure out who would buy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sell version two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That one machine could become somebody\u2019s <strong>first prototype<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The funding would also support low-cost or sponsored workshops, AI and vibe-coding education, website building, entrepreneurship, marketing, storytelling, software, equipment, workshop space, educational materials and scholarships. I also want programs for adults whose jobs are being disrupted by AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because grant money is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what I actually want to buy is <strong>access<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 3D printer can become someone&#8217;s first prototype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An AI workshop can become someone&#8217;s first website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A storytelling class can become someone&#8217;s first book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A vibe-coding session can become someone&#8217;s first company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a much better return on investment than another branded tote bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I Don\u2019t Want to Build an Innovation Program for People Who Already Have Every Advantage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want the kid whose parents don&#8217;t work in technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The immigrant who is still figuring out how everything works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman rebuilding after a career change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person who just lost a job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person who has a brilliant idea but has never once described themselves as a <strong>founder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because AI has the potential to become an extraordinary equalizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For possibly the first time, one person sitting with a laptop can access capabilities that previously required designers, programmers, marketers, copywriters, researchers and entire departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there&#8217;s a catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people who already have money, education and strong networks are usually very good at adopting powerful new tools first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So AI can narrow the opportunity gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or it can make the gap even bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know which one I want to work toward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Legacy Doesn\u2019t Have to Be Inherited<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A legacy doesn&#8217;t have to be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A trust fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A famous last name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or your parents&#8217; university sweatshirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A legacy can be <strong>knowledge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A skill nobody can take away from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ability to look at an idea and think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I know how to build that.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could be a 12-year-old starting her first company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could be the first entrepreneur in a family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first person to write a book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Build software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Invent a product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Own an asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employ somebody else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 18, I didn&#8217;t want my mother&#8217;s story to define me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, I understand something more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where we come from matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happened to us matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What we inherited\u2014or didn&#8217;t inherit\u2014matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But none of it has to be the final chapter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want Legacy Launcher Labs to give people something even better than legacy admission:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>the tools to create a legacy worth inheriting.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because one of the saddest places for a great idea isn&#8217;t a failed startup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a graveyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So while we&#8217;re here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Build the thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if the Amber Grant wants to buy the first 3D printer\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know exactly where to put it. \ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some People Inherit a Legacy.
