The real value is often in maintaining systems, reducing vulnerabilities, managing access, monitoring technology and helping prevent problems before they interrupt the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The best IT problem may be the one you never knew you almost had.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Small Businesses Are Technology Companies Now\u2014Whether They Like It or Not<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to run a software company to depend on technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A real estate office depends on email, CRM systems, digital contracts and cloud storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A medical or dental office depends on scheduling systems and patient information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A contractor depends on phones, estimates, accounting software and customer records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A retailer depends on payment systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A professional-services company may have almost its entire business sitting inside email accounts, laptops and cloud applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take away the technology and many modern small businesses could barely operate for a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet small-business owners often treat IT as something to worry about after there is already a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the equivalent of buying a fire extinguisher while the kitchen is burning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cybersecurity Is No Longer Just a \u201cBig Company\u201d Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also a dangerous assumption that cybercriminals only care about major corporations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smaller businesses can be attractive targets precisely because they may have fewer protections, fewer dedicated technology employees and less formal cybersecurity infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And a cybersecurity problem does not have to look like a dramatic Hollywood hacking scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is much simpler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fake email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A reused password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An employee account that should have been shut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fraudulent invoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An unprotected device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A piece of software that was never updated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack may be sophisticated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entry point often is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means cybersecurity is not just an IT issue anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is an operational issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a financial issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And increasingly, it is a leadership issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cost of Downtime Is Bigger Than the Repair Bill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When technology breaks, the cost is rarely limited to the technician&#8217;s invoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine ten employees unable to work for four hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are paying salaries while productivity stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customers are waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calls may be missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orders may be delayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employees become frustrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Management gets distracted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat does it cost my company when the technology stops working?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI Makes IT More Important, Not Less<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artificial intelligence is making technology easier for ordinary business owners to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also creating an entirely new wave of tools, accounts, integrations, automations and security questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employees can now adopt new software almost instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A business might use ChatGPT, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, accounting software, a CRM, an AI transcription platform, cloud storage, automation tools and a dozen other applications at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That convenience creates opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also creates complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone still needs to think about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who has access?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where is company data being stored?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens when an employee leaves?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which tools contain confidential information?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are systems backed up?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are passwords and permissions being managed correctly?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens if one of these systems fails?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI does not eliminate the need for IT strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It makes responsible technology management even more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology Should Support the Business\u2014Not Become the Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small-business owners usually do not start companies because they are excited about password resets and software updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They want to serve customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sell products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Build teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solve problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Create something meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology should help them do those things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best technology strategy is not necessarily the one with the most expensive software or the most complicated system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the one that helps a company operate reliably without forcing the owner to become the unofficial IT department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is where professionals like Darrel become valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Person Preventing the Disaster May Look Like They\u2019re Doing Nothing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a funny paradox in preventative work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone is excellent at preventing problems, you may never fully see the problems they prevented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cybersecurity breach that never happened does not send you an invoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The backup you never needed does not interrupt your afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The employee whose access was properly removed never becomes a security incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The server that was maintained correctly simply keeps working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Success can look remarkably uneventful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes that is exactly what you are paying for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if your IT person looks like they are doing nothing while everything continues working perfectly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe ask one more question before deciding you do not need them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>They may
